Fitsteps walks

Fitsteps walks A variety of walks to suit all abilities, from pure beginners to seasoned ramblers, from gentle strolls in the park to exhilarating country hikes of up to 6 miles. They include summer evening walks and historical tours, all walks are free (a small charge applies for historical tours) and are open to all. The walks take place up to three times a week, are led by trained volunteers and are suitable for all levels of fitness. They are ideal for those who are new to exercise, recovering from an illness or just wish to make new friends. WEA Course:’ The Rise of Scientific Europe’. Friends Meeting House, Butt Lane. 7.45pm. A 10 week course looking at why science – experimental practice and theoretical reasoning – arose in Europe and not in China and the Middle East. Enquiries: Mike Powell 01621 892398.
Plough Monday. 7.30pm. Annual tradition where a plough is paraded through the town accompanied by Molly dancers with black faces and hobble-de-hoy peasant costumes. The tradition is a reminder that if the agricultural workers starved in the winter, there would be nothing to eat in the summer. The plough is blessed in All Saints’ Church at 6.30pm on Sunday 10th January. The procession starts on the Hythe Quay, working its’ way up the High Street to the Warwick Arms, then to the Blue Boar arriving at approx 9pm. Enjoy the specially brewed Ploughboy Stout.
